Care2: Thirty miles to the gallon is not fuel efficient!

It's not a secret. Gas prices are out of control and reached a historic high this Memorial Day weekend, the official start of summer drive season. It's time for Congress to do something meaningful to control gas prices by requiring our cars, light trucks and SUVs to go further on a gallon of gasoline. But the powerful auto industry continues to stand in the way of miles per gallon standards.

Congress hasn't increased fuel efficiency standards since 1975 and after decades of inaction, it's time to get America moving with more fuel efficient vehicles. The debate is heating up in Congress and support for increasing fuel standards has a lot of momentum. But the auto industry, big oil and their army of lobbyists have shifted into high gear to oppose new fuel efficiency standards that will save us money on gasoline.

The average household is going to shell out more than $3,200 this year on gas. An average fuel efficiency standard of 35 miles per gallon will save a typical family more than $500 annually.

Tell the auto industry to stop standing in the way of efforts to increase fuel efficiency standards that will save American families money at the pump.

Avvaz: Victory - Wolfowitz out

19/5/2007

Dear Avaaz supporter,

Last night, Paul Wolfowitz resigned.

The balance of power in the world is changing, and we're part of that -- you, me, everyone involved in Avaaz campaigns.

Two years ago, George W Bush was able to install Paul Wolfowitz as World Bank President despite the international outcry. But yesterday, Bush simply could not overpower world opinion. He could no longer ignore you – the many thousands who supported our campaign, and the many millions who felt the same around the world.

We're taking a moment to let this victory sink in. It's a success for accountability, for global democracy, and for the right of the world's people to have a voice in international decisions.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/tellafriend.php

Think back to how this story unfolded as the rich world backtracked on its development promises, giving less aid in 2006 than they did in 2005:

The morning the Wolfowitz scandal broke, Avaaz launched a global campaign to remove him from the bank. Soon we hit our target of 50,000 people signing our petition. We used another powerful tool - satire - creating a YouTube video spoof starring Wolfowitz, "The Bank". The video caught the imagination of the international news media in newspapers like USA Today, the Guardian and the Washington Post, and aired on national television in France and Germany. It was even making the rounds inside the World Bank itself.

Last week we hand-delivered the petition in Washington DC. Dozens of folks with banners and flags from around the world showed up to represent the 52,270 people from 181 countries who had signed on. A crowd of reporters turned out, a forest of television cameras from Holland, Germany, and Austria; Al Jazeera; Rupert Murdoch's Fox News; US networks like NBC and ABC; and the big wire services like AP and Reuters. After the protest, the head of the World Bank News Bureau came out to personally accept the printout of the petition, and promised to take it to the World Bank board.

We know we were heard. There's more to do to make global development accountable in future. But amidst the endless negotiations between Wolfowitz, Bush, and the rest of the world's leaders, another story emerged -- of a global public no longer silent about our global institutions.

This victory is just the beginning. In a few short months, over 900,000 citizens around the world have already taken part in different Avaaz.org actions – a network of concerned individuals, connected across borders by the Internet, empowered to have a voice in the world's decision-making. Avaaz means "voice," and your voice is being heard along with others around the world. We are proud to speak up together – and we don't want to take you for granted, you decide which campaigns to support.

The faster this movement grows, the more quickly we'll be able to close the gap between the world we have and the world we want. This victory can be a springboard to build our strength for the next campaign. So if you're as excited as we are, please take a moment now to tell ten friends about Avaaz - click here:

Avvaz: Iraq is Dying

From: avaaz@avaaz.org
Subject: Iraq is Dying

Dear friends,

The nightmare in Iraq worsens daily. It's make-or-break time -- but next Thursday in Egypt, we could start to turn the tide. Because on May 3rd – for the first time ever - top US and Iraqi leaders will meet with Iran and Syria plus international powers. They can agree on negotiations to end the war -- or escalate their bloody conflict.

Iraq: It Ends on May 3rd Avaaz is launching a major advertising and text-message campaign inside Iraq this week to bring Iraqi voices to this decisive meeting. As citizens around the world, let's join our voices with theirs to end this war -- sign the petition calling for negotiations and a withdrawal of US troops here:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/iraq_new_plan/

To make sure we're heard, we'll hand-deliver our petition to the leaders' conference in Sharm El-Sheikh on May 3rd, and project Iraqi text-messages on to a huge wall near the US Capitol building in Washington.

Thousands of Iraqi Avaaz members have supported our N.E.W. plan -- for all-party "Negotiations", "Empowering" international mediators and the responsible "Withdrawal" of US troops. Please read the personal email below from Khalid, an Iraqi Avaaz member. Khalid and our other Iraqi members need a show of global support from the rest of us. The campaign is already supported by over 75,000 people as well as key international experts -- let's gather a massive, united voice of Iraqis and citizens round the world to tell our leaders to do the right thing in Iraq:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/iraq_new_plan/

With hundreds of thousands dead and 4 million made refugees, just criticising the US government for this catastrophe is not enough. It's now the responsibility of all of us to help save Iraq, and the only solution is a political solution.

Khalid Jarrar and his mother Faiza Jarrar have been wonderful supporters of Avaaz in Iraq. We asked Khalid to write a message to Avaaz members, here's what he emailed us yesterday:

alright:) feel free to edit it if its too long. and just for the record, i am not a drama queen, these were written for real, and tears in my eyes are my witness...

Dear AVAAZ,

I want to introduce myself, and tell you a story, but i don't know how to start, and where to stop.

My name is Khalid, i am an environmental engineering student and i am 24, but this is the least important to know about me, what's really important for me to tell, and for you to know, is that I am Iraqi, and that I have a deep, deep wound in my soul, that has been bleeding for over four years now.

Iraq, my soul, is bleeding. And i had to leave it against my will, because of the incredibly bad security situation that led to me getting kidnapped and my family paying a huge ransom, which made me leave immediately after i was released in fear that i would be kidnapped again. I left Iraq one month before my graduation and had to come to Jordan, which made me lose two years of my university time and life, but even worse, made me lose the company of the Tigris and the Euphrates.

I had to travel, leaving Iraq behind me, to live like a refuge, one of a million other refuges, in a country of less than five millions people, that already has its own financial problems without needing our additional burden to add to it. I am an Iraqi refuge in Jordan.

Since I left in July 2005, things have exponentially deteriorated in every possible aspect, now people hardly get 1 hours of electricity a day, they have water problems, regular lack of gas that its prices multiplied about 20 times since the war. Let alone the main and real problems of the actual presence of an occupation that is leaching on the country and causing the destruction to its people, unity, sovereignty, infrastructure and economy.

Iraq is the loving mother, that gave birth to thinkers and builders, people that enriched humanity with their contributions in all aspects of life, people that their civilization accumulated for over 7000 years till now.

Iraq, the noble wisdom, the land of the two flowing rivers, the land of the mosques and churches, is in crises, and needs your help.

yes. it needs your help.

Iraqis need the support of the world, of every human being that believes in the values of justice and peace, of every person that cares about the judgment of history on what the world did when Iraq needed its support the most. Iraq, needs your voice, to support the voices of its own people, to help remove that injustice, and help it rise up again and stand on its feet.

Help us demand to give Iraq back to Iraqis, and to prove to the future generations once more, that occupations don't last, that occupations are wrong, and that the will of people is invincible. Help us clear to them that our hearts and minds, our values and sense of justice, are stronger than any tank, battleship or rocket. Help us by signing AVAAZ.org petition that will be presented to the politicians discussing the future of Iraq security, help by asking your friends to do so, let our voices be louder than the roars of weapons and the madness of greeds, help us, sign AVAAZ.org petition now, let our voice be heard, support Iraq today, and once the last occupying soldier leaves iraq, and once we rebuild our country with out own hands, we will reciever you in Baghdad, and you will see the love and gratitude competed by nothing but Iraqi hospitality.

Together we can prove that our brotherhood is strong, together we can prove that our bonds are real, I can see that day coming, really soon.

Khalid

WWF: Add your photo and help save tigers

Subject: Add your photo and help save tigers
From: passport@wwf.panda.org

Dear Brooke,

The tiger is one of the most revered, feared and yet popular species on Earth. It is perhaps the most powerful symbol for all of our planet's endangered wildlife.

Take action now and help end the tiger trade at:

http://mail.panda.org/inxmail/url

Despite international and domestic bans, a thriving black market for tiger skins and bones threatens to wipe out wild tigers. China, with its booming economy, burgeoning human population and ancient traditions of using tiger parts as medicine and clothing, is the world's leading consumer of tiger products.

The good news is that the Chinese government has taken decisive action to help save the species, outlawing the trade of tiger products and running public awareness campaigns to curb the demand for tiger products.

But there now is a new threat that could put every last wild tiger at risk: the increasing population of captive-bred tigers on so-called "tiger farms". Investors in these businesses are now pressuring the Chinese government to allow them to sell tiger products.

Reopening even limited legal trade in tiger products from farms would reignite a demand for wild tiger products and spark an open season on tigers in the wild. We need to send a strong, clear and powerful message to the world that this simply cannot happen.

Take action now and add your photo to WWF's tiger photo mosaic and show your support for tiger conservation. Visit:

http://mail.panda.org/inxmail/url

With your help we can end the tiger trade.

Thank you

Avaaz: Wolfowitz on brink

From: avaaz@avaaz.org
Subject: Wolfowitz on brink- "The Office" video could tip it
Date: 21 April 2007 6:25:41 GMT+10:00
To: Brooke@...

Dear friend,

Wolfowitz is on the brink. International support for him has collapsed--but the Bush administration is trying to prop him up. Your help now could mean victory!

Avaaz has just released a video spoofing the global TV programme "The Office"--with Wolfowitz in the role of the awful boss. World Bank staff and international media are telling us they’re excited about the video and our petition. Could you help build the pressure on Wolfowitz by forwarding this email to ten of your friends? Ask them to watch the video and sign up here:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/sack_wolfowitz/?cl=

The Office is a global phenomenon, with hit editions in the UK, the US, Germany, France, and French Canada. Everyone everywhere knows what it's like to have the wrong person in charge. And Paul Wolfowitz, through a mix of ideology, arrogance, self-righteousness, and now corruption and hypocrisy, is a classic nightmare boss. So what better way to shame - and fire - Wolfowitz than to put him into The Office?

The video has already attracted international press attention. Reporters are writing about Avaaz's "fire wolfowitz" petition - which 40,000 of us from 189 countries have already signed. If the petition grows now and the video spreads, the pressure to fire Wolfowitz could become unstoppable.

Send the petition and the video to ten of your friends now:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/sack_wolfowitz/?cl=

We wouldn’t trust Paul Wolfowitz to run The Office’s paper company. But for his unforgivable work on the Iraq war, George Bush gave Wolfowitz control of life-or-death decisions affecting hundreds of millions through the Bank. Now he’s been caught red-handed. This is a moment when global pressure really can make a difference -- and bring a little justice to the World Bank.

With hope,

Ben, Hannah, Ricken, and the rest of the Avaazteam

PS: We got help on the video from Phil de Vellis, a fan of Avaaz who made the YouTube "1984" Hillary Clinton ad that became a global phenomenon. (Thanks, Phil!) Our Wolfowitz video used the US version of The Office because that's where the World Bank is located--but if you have some time this weekend, please make your own version, upload it to YouTube, and tell us about it! UCS: Don't be duped by Exxon's PR

You guys have some ground to cover to make up for the damage caused by your immoral campaigns, and of your business in general (think Exxon Valdez). Please listen to the cries of dispair at the destruction being caused to our environment and change your business model and make decisions to help fix our planet.

Form letter follows.

I'm alarmed by ExxonMobil's efforts to undermine science and cast doubt on the facts about global warming. The corporation's recent efforts to soften its image and stop funding a few climate contrarian groups do not go far enough.

I urge you to make ExxonMobil's shift on global warming genuine and to:

  • Stop funding all groups that disseminate misinformation on global warming, publicize that information promptly, and establish clear standards for groups that receive funding in the future.
  • Match or exceed the percentage of profits that other oil giants invest in clean energy technologies.
  • Commit to reduce the corporation's global warming pollution by 15 percent by 2020.
  • Stop blocking meaningful action to address climate change and assist efforts to pass strong policies that would reduce U.S. global warming pollution by 80 percent by mid century.

Signed,

Me

Dear you,

For years, ExxonMobil has been undermining science and casting doubt on the facts about global warming--just like the tobacco industry tried to mislead the public about the dangers of smoking.

More than 50,000 UCS activists have taken action targeting ExxonMobil, and the company is listening. Now we need you to urge them to take the next step: http://ucsaction.org/campaign/exxonnextstep/

Earlier this year, the Union of Concerned Scientists released a report documenting how ExxonMobil funneled millions of dollars to climate contrarian groups and worked to delay meaningful action on global warming.

Our report received widespread media coverage, prompted Congress to hold a hearing about ExxonMobil's actions, and has generated new pressure on the corporation. Faced with public outrage, ExxonMobil launched a campaign aimed at softening its image and recently agreed to stop funding several of the 43 climate contrarian groups highlighted in the UCS report.

Your actions targeting ExxonMobil have had an impact--but by withholding funding from just a handful of groups and continuing to support the rest, ExxonMobil is simply trying to improve its image while it continues to deceive the public and undermine legislation to reduce global warming pollution.

As the world's most profitable energy corporation, ExxonMobil has the power and resources to go beyond slick PR and corporate spin and commit to meaningful actions that will help protect our children and the planet.

Send a letter today to ExxonMobil urging them to stop funding all global warming contrarian groups, publicize that information promptly, invest in clean energy solutions, reduce the corporation's global warming pollution, and stop blocking federal action addressing climate change. http://ucsaction.org/campaign/exxonnextstep/

Sincerely,

Kate Abend National Field Organizer Climate Change Program

P.S. You can help ensure ExxonMobil hears our message loud and clear by passing this alert along to friends and family. The more letters we deliver the louder our voice will be. Click here: http://ucsaction.org/campaign/exxonnextstep/forward/ws6w3un29xnmj67?

Avaaz: Fire Wolfowitz

From: avaaz@avaaz.org
Subject: Fire Wolfowitz
Date: 14 April 2007 5:56:38 GMT+10:00
To: Brooke@...

Dear Avaaz Member,

On Friday morning, Paul Wolfowitz -- President Bush's key architect of the Iraq war, now president of the World Bank and self-styled fighter of corruption -- was caught red-handed in a corruption scandal of his own. He pushed a huge pay raise for his girlfriend, and hid the facts from his organization and the world.

He's got to go.

The World Bank's board, made up of our governments from around the world, is now deciding whether Wolfowitz should keep his job. An immediate, massive, and global outcry could make the difference. Our petition is three words long: "Sack Paul Wolfowitz." Sign it here:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/sack_wolfowitz

When Paul Wolfowitz was a top official in President Bush's Department of Defense, he was one of the Iraq war's biggest backers. When the war became a fiasco, instead of firing Wolfowitz, Bush gave him a promotion--to president of the World Bank. At the Bank, he vowed to make corruption his top issue--but alienated the world by delaying aid packages to India, Kenya, and other countries without consulting the bank's Executive Board.

Now we've learned that he didn't practice what he preached.

Wolfowitz's girlfriend was a senior World Bank employee. When he became president, the Bank's ethics rules would not allow him to keep her on staff under his supervision. So he transferred her to the US State Department--but kept her on the Bank's payroll, and gave her a US$60,000 pay raise. Her salary rose to US$193,590, higher than Condi Rice's. What's more, it appears that Wolfowitz hid the evidence of what he'd done.

Fighting corruption is a key to ending poverty. But there can't be one standard for the rich and powerful and a different one for everybody else.

The 24-member board of the World Bank, which uncovered Wolfowitz's corruption through a special investigation, is now deciding his fate. Bush is likely pulling strings to help Wolfowitz keep his job. It's time for global public opinion to weigh in--which means it's all up to you.

Click here now to sign the petition, and then send this email to ten friends:

www.avaaz.org/en/sack_wolfowitz

Wolfowitz claimed the Iraq war would spread democracy, but it sparked a civil war. He promised to fight corruption, but engaged in it himself.

He talks a lot about accountability. It's time to bring some accountability to Paul Wolfowitz.

With hope,

Ben, Ricken, Hannah, Galit, Lee-Sean, Tom, and the rest of the Avaaz team. Do not hit reply to this email to unsubscribe. https://secure.avaaz.org/act/?r=unsub&b=91&lang=en

UCS: Wall should stop financing global warming

Tell the Wall Street Seven to Stop Financing Global Warming!

Dear ,

Across the United States, utilities are proposing the construction of more than 150 coal-fired power plants. Construction of these plants would increase U.S. global warming pollution by 25 percent, making it virtually impossible for the United States to bring emissions down to levels scientists say are needed to avert the grave threats posed by global warming. The Wall Street Seven, a group of banks including JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley, are the major funders for the new plants. Please send a letter calling on these banks to end their support for proposed coal plants and to help finance clean, renewable energy instead.

Sincerely,

Kate Abend National Field Organizer UCS Climate Program

POWERFUL OPTION--INSTRUCTIONS TO RESPOND VIA THE WEB: Please make your letter personal by adding in your own thoughts and concerns. Every letter makes a difference, but customized letters have the greatest effect! Go to the following URL: http://ucsaction.org/campaign/4_3_07_banks_finance_coal/ws6w3un49wkd5wj?

Your letter will be addressed and sent to: CEOs of the Wall Street Seven

----THIS LETTER WILL BE SENT IN YOUR NAME----
Dear CEO,

As a consumer and potential investor, I am deeply concerned about global warming. I urge your company not to finance construction of any new coal plants across the United States. These plants would increase U.S. global warming pollution by 25 percent, making it virtually impossible for the United States to bring emissions down to levels scientists say are needed to avert the grave threats posed by global warming. With U.S. regulation of global warming emissions on the horizon, the cost of power from the proposed coal plants will rise, leaving both consumers and ratepayers at risk.

Your company claims to be an environmental leader, but financing these old, dirty coal plants is inconsistent with those claims. Global warming is one of the most important environmental issues facing the planet.

I urge your company to play a true leadership role by increasingly financing clean, renewable energy, such as wind and solar, and ending your support for highly polluting coal plants.

Thank you for your consideration. Your response would be appreciated.

Sincerely, Me

Get Up: Your future, not their profits

Dear friends,

The last thing most Australians want is to follow our American allies down the path to Big Money democracy, where too often wealthy special interests and cashed up lobbyists decide what's best for everyone else. Problem is, that's increasingly what we're up against, and nowhere is this more obvious - or dangerous - than Canberra's approach to climate change.

Last week, the Prime Minister made headlines for admitting he launched his national nuclear inquiry with knowledge that a major Liberal party donor was setting up his own private nuclear company. Now he's given his mate, and former Telstra boss charged with running this "independent" inquiry, a plum promotion to chair Australia's only national nuclear research and policy body.

Despite all the hot air coming out from Canberra about lobbyists, cronyism and cracking down on big money interests, influence inside the people's house is increasingly up for sale. But we can come together right now, and build something new: a campaign fund for Climate Action that comes from us; so we can fight for our future, not their profits.

https://www.getup.org.au/secure/donateclimate.asp The truth, of course, is that global warming isn't going to be turned around with one burst or high-profile campaign. The solutions we need include a massive investment in renewables, a turnaround in energy efficiency and an immediate cap on greenhouse gas emissions.

To make this future happen, we need to gather the means now to fund an unrelenting people's campaign; for calls to action they'll see and hear every place they turn. Together there are more than 170,000 of us. Collectively, we can build a Climate Action Fund to fight for a sustainable Australia without having to be millionaires ourselves.

Instead of waiting for Government to act, with your help, we'll roll out some big ideas of our own. With $10,000, or just 200 donations of $50, we will implement a sustained, direct lobbying campaign in Canberra where our nation's key environmental policies are made. With $25,000 we will organise prominent, locally-based events in communities around the nation, to turn up the heat where decision makers need our votes. And if together we can raise $150,000, we will launch a massive Climate Action advertising campaign in the build-up to election day. Will you help make it happen? https://www.getup.org.au/secure/donateclimate.asp

Already more than 75,000 people have made their mark on GetUp's Climate Action Map. We've created an Action Agenda for the next Parliament, with a detailed list of policy demands for leaders to commit to now. It's already got the tick of approval from experts and input from many GetUp members, and you can check it out now on our blog.

We first got the Prime Minister's attention late last year, when we helped commission a Newspoll revealing more than 90 percent of his own voters didn't believe the Government was doing enough to stop climate change. Then we stepped out in the hundreds of thousands across the country to share a Walk Against Warming.

Now we've seen a radical shift in Government rhetoric - but talk is cheap. They'd still rather tinker with our light bulbs than commit to the big, systemic changes. They think our determination can't possibly match the dollars of their mates. But we've proven when we work together we can move mountains. Please donate today, to redouble the fight for our sustainable future.

https://www.getup.org.au/secure/donateclimate.asp

Thank you for believing in the power of all of us, The GetUp team
