The last thing most Australians want is to follow our American allies down the path to Big Money democracy, where too often wealthy special interests and cashed up lobbyists decide what's best for everyone else. Problem is, that's increasingly what we're up against, and nowhere is this more obvious - or dangerous - than Canberra's approach to climate change.

Last week, the Prime Minister made headlines for admitting he launched his national nuclear inquiry with knowledge that a major Liberal party donor was setting up his own private nuclear company. Now he's given his mate, and former Telstra boss charged with running this "independent" inquiry, a plum promotion to chair Australia's only national nuclear research and policy body.

Despite all the hot air coming out from Canberra about lobbyists, cronyism and cracking down on big money interests, influence inside the people's house is increasingly up for sale. But we can come together right now, and build something new: a campaign fund for Climate Action that comes from us; so we can fight for our future, not their profits.

The solutions we need include a massive investment in renewables, a turnaround in energy efficiency and an immediate cap on greenhouse gas emissions.

To make this future happen, we need to gather the means now to fund an unrelenting people's campaign; for calls to action they'll see and hear every place they turn. Together there are more than 170,000 of us. Collectively, we can build a Climate Action Fund to fight for a sustainable Australia without having to be millionaires ourselves.

Instead of waiting for Government to act, with your help, we'll roll out some big ideas of our own. With $10,000, or just 200 donations of $50, we will implement a sustained, direct lobbying campaign in Canberra where our nation's key environmental policies are made. With $25,000 we will organise prominent, locally-based events in communities around the nation, to turn up the heat where decision makers need our votes. And if together we can raise $150,000, we will launch a massive Climate Action advertising campaign in the build-up to election day. Already more than 75,000 people have made their mark on GetUp's Climate Action Map. We first got the Prime Minister's attention late last year, when we helped commission a Newspoll revealing more than 90 percent of his own voters didn't believe the Government was doing enough to stop climate change. Then we stepped out in the hundreds of thousands across the country to share a Walk Against Warming.

Now we've seen a radical shift in Government rhetoric - but talk is cheap. They'd still rather tinker with our light bulbs than commit to the big, systemic changes. They think our determination can't possibly match the dollars of their mates. But we've proven when we work together we can move mountains.
